911 Call if you can. text if you can't. Text to 911 is now available in Santa Clara County. If you need help, but can't safely speak on the phone or are unable to speak, use your mobile phone to send a text message to 911. When to use it.  Calling is the best and fastest way to reach 911.  But you should text if: You're deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability - You're in a situation where it's not safe to call 911 for help - You're having a medical emergency and cannot speak on the phone.

Text to 9-1-1 is now available in San Jose. If you need help, but can't safely speak on the phone or are unable to speak, use your mobile phone to send a text message to 911 (no dashes or spaces).

  1. Enter the numbers 911 (no dashes or spaces) in the “To” field.
  2. The first text message to 9-1-1 should be brief. Include address, city, and type of emergency (police, fire or medical).
  3. Push the "Send" button.
  4. Be prepared to answer questions and follow instructions from the 9-1-1 call taker.
  5. Text in simple words - do not use abbreviations.
  6. Keep text messages brief and concise.
