Access Instructions for Users with Disabilities

Welcome to the San Jose Police Department website. The City of San José is currently incorporating into our website the Web Page Disability Access Design Standards developed by the Office of Equality Assurance. We are pleased to provide an alternative medium for accessing information about our programs and services. If you have any suggestions for improving the accessibility features of our website, please contact us.

Instructions for Users with Visual Disabilities

Our website has been designed to be used with a screen reader. In addition, most images on our site are accompanied by a word image tag that may be visible if your browser supports the alt-text function.

We have many documents posted in PDF format (Portable Document Format). These documents can be read aloud to you using the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. Download the free Acrobat Reader. Once the PDF page is opened in Adobe Reader, select the View menu, then Read Out Loud, then either Read This Page Only or Read To End of Document.

If a web page has an online form that is not accessible, please call the phone number or email the office listed for assistance in obtaining the form or filling it out.

Instructions for Users Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

The City of San José website Disability Access Design Standard requires that all audio and video clips have text transcriptions or descriptions with a closed-captioned (CC) hyperlink. We are currently working on identifying non-compliant legacy audio and video content and addressing accessibility requirements.

The San Jose Police Department is taking an active approach on meeting Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (29 U.S.C. Sec. 794d) (“Section 508”) regulations for website accessibility. We are working with our website vendor to review webpages for compliance with the technical requirements of Level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1

Our website has been designed with the following accessibility guidelines in mind:

  • The standard font used throughout the site has been chosen to be easily legible.
  • Wherever possible, we use live text instead of graphics to reduce the download time of pages and increase your control.
  • No information is exclusively conveyed using color. This doesn't mean that colors are not used to organize information; instead it means there are also other, non-color dependent ways of doing this.
  • All images and hyperlinks, where appropriate, have an alternative text attribute. This means when an image or hyperlink is conveying important information its content is described with an alternative text.
  • We have attempted specifically to comply with Section 508 referring to website accessibility standards.

San Jose Police Department policies and training materials are made available to the public via a Public Document Archive Library, a file browsing web application.  These files are available to the public as required pursuant to Senate Bill 978. PDFs viewable and downloadable from the Public Document Library do not automatically conform to WCAG 2.0. We are taking an active approach to ensure all policies posted are compliant. Certain training materials were created for specific internal Police Department audience and, therefore, may not fully comply with WCAG 2.0 at this time. If you found certain files to be inaccessible, please contact us at (408) 277-8900 for assistance.

San Jose PD is committed to making our services accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. Please email our webmaster if you have questions or feedback regarding our website’s accessibility, or if you have difficulty accessing the site.
