SJPD Seeking Public's Assistance with Homicide #13

The San José Police Department is asking for the public's assistance with any information that can assist in the apprehension of the suspect and the identification of the victim for San José's 13th homicide of 2024.

On May 9, 2024, at approximately 5:46 PM, Patrol Officers responded to a report of a shooting at an unhoused encampment in the area of Mclaughlin Avenue and HWY 280. When Officers arrived, they located an adult male victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The victim was transported by medical personnel to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

SJPD Homicide Unit Detectives identified Joseph "Jo Jo" Martinez as the primary suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. Currently, suspect Martinez is outstanding, The suspect is described as a Hispanic male adult, 5' 3" tall and approximately 115 pounds, with a teardrop tattoo on his face.

The victim is described to be an East Indian adult male aged 30 - 34 years old, 6' 0" tall, approximately 141 pounds, with straight black hair and a tattoo of a trident on the right arm. The victim was known in the area as "Kumar" and is believed to have gone to school in San José between 2006 and 2010.

On May 9, 2024, at approximately 5:46 PM, Patrol Officers responded to a report of a shooting at an unhoused encampment in the area of Mclaughlin Avenue and HWY 280. When Officers arrived, they located an adult male victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The victim was neither conscious nor breathing and lifesaving measures were started on scene. The victim was transported by medical personnel to a local hospital where he was stabilized but remained in critical condition.  The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival.  On May 12, 2024,  SJPD was notified that the victim had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The San José Police Department Homicide Unit is following up on the incident. 

The motive and circumstances surrounding the event are under investigation. 

The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office after confirming the victim’s identity and notifying next of kin.

This is the City's 13th homicide of 2024.
