On January 16, 2024 at approximately 1:36 AM, San José Police Officers uncovered evidence pertaining to the illegal sale of firearms during a proactive traffic enforcement stop. Patrol Officers identified the suspect as Juan Rodriguez Sandoval. During the course of the investigation, Officers also discovered the suspect was transporting the firearms while minors were inside of the vehicle.
With the assistance of the Gun and Hazardous Offender Suppression Team (GHOST), patrol Officers obtained an arrest warrant for suspect Rodriguez Sandoval and a search warrant for the suspect's residence. Additionally, Officers obtained a Gun Violence Restraining Order (GVRO) to seize the suspect's legally owned firearms that were not the subject to the criminal investigation.
On April 25, 2024, with the assistance of the Special Operations Mobile Emergency Response Group & Equipment (MERGE) Unit, a search warrant was executed in the 1700 block of Cortez Avenue in San José. The suspect was located and taken into custody at the residence. Officers seized nineteen (19) firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition, explosive material, and firearms accessories.
During the execution of the search warrant, Officers identified a secondary residence associated to this investigation in the county of San Benito. A residential search warrant was obtained and executed at the residence. An additional seventeen (17) firearms were seized. The search warrant and GVRO yielded a total of thirty six (36) seized firearms, including six (6) privately made firearms and one assault weapon.
The suspect was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for possession of illegal firearms, possession of an assault weapon, and child endangerment.
